I work with the material of my own life, inspired by the moments that pierce through the mundane – those of wonder, mystery, and transcendence. Although visually playful, my work always carries a sense of impending doom, which is intuitively embedded within my practice. Vibrant colour palettes and expressive brushstrokes disrupt the certainty of a depicted scene, while exploring vulnerability, longing, and seduction.
Nature plays a central role in my life and paintings, functioning as a reflection of memory, fantasy, and identity. I am particularly drawn to the light, natural and artificial, for its ability to define an emotional state. I approach painting the same way - by exploring how colours and gestural marks reveal my characters and accentuate different facets of the narrative.
I let the painting unfold directly on the canvas, allowing the brush to guide me toward where the life of a painting lies, otherwise, the sense of discovery feels staged, and the magic fades. I approach painting as an evolving form, catching its malleability before it becomes stale.
